CUSTOMER PROFILE

In its nearly a century in business, Leslie Electric has weathered great storms and  has stood the test of time. “We have learned that by remaining small and focused on each customer’s unique needs- and by being flexible enough to adapt quickly to changing market forces- we can stay true to our long-term goals and approach the future confidently,” explains Leslie Electric’s Steve Asbury.

For 95 years, the experts at Leslie Electric have supported development throughout Michigan by providing electrical components to contractors, local businesses, builders, school districts, and government agencies. From a modest business selling electrical parts, the company has grown significantly from its single location.

In 2016, the company decided to upgrade its outdated ERP Software to help solve for the inefficiency and disconnect business operations struggles the company faced. Together Steve and Mike Thayer, Purchasing Manager at Leslie Electric, were on the hunt for a replacement. Thayer recalls, “We had a very short-list, and it was clear that Savance Enterprise was the best fit for our business by far.”

TAKING ON CHANGE

The distribution model is deceptively simple: buy a product and resell it for a profit. Nevertheless, issues arise and for a company experiencing rapid growth, those issues can quickly snowball. One such area for Leslie Electric was an old, inflexible, and nebulous order management system.

Thayer explained, “FACTS was ready to ‘completely go out’. We had no more backups and we were worried about losing all of our critical custom information and data.”  In addition, Thayer explains, “we relied heavily on paper workflows and handwritten notes to run day-to-day operations, making future growth completely stagnant”. After being introduced to Savance through an IMARK Electrical connection, Asbury walked through his workflows alongside Savance product experts and was assured this was the correct step in the right direction.

When it came down to evaluating features, Savance’s Order Management was a critical element of the software that stood out against competitors. Savance Enterprise offered a new streamlined workflow that provided complete visibility to order status, raised alerts on issues, ensured the right person was working on the right problem, and increased customer satisfaction by proactively communicating order details.

Leslie Electric-Counter-Sales

At the time of their evaluation, Leslie Electric had no idea how doing business and keeping teams connected would shift significantly in the years to come. They did, however, know that any new ERP system they moved to had to offer access to the software from wherever employees were, ensuring the next solution would be convenient and Cloud-based. The decision to select a provider who offered this proved to be well worth the investment as the ways to do business shifted drastically in 2020 due to an unforeseen pandemic.

“Even though we had folks on the team who weren’t quite ready to embrace change, I think Savance being onsite with us and walking us through the process side-by-side helped ease their uncertainty”, explains Thayer. “The day we went live, 3 people from Savance were on-site with us and helped get everyone through any hiccups that arose. That team stayed with us for a week and was there to answer any questions. Once it was time for us to ‘fly on our own’, we continued to feel like we could manage everything because of Savance’s quick response times.  Any time we had a question or hit a snag, we had someone providing us with the answer within an hour of asking it.  It’s been a great relationship,” says Thayer.

ADVANCING BUSINESS

Savance has helped Leslie Electric continue to run business smoothly for more than 8 years with convenient features and flexibility of the system. Thayer adds “It was straightforward to customize the order entry screen, link to the substitute database, show the top three recommendations, and view the cost,” Thayer explains. “That makes the salesperson’s job faster and simpler.”

Another significant impact of Savance Enterprise has been an uptick in project profitability. Thayer observed, “Savance Enterprise has given us the ability to ensure that when a large job is closed, we’ve billed everything. It has also allowed our procurement team to purchase much more efficiently and receive the product at a single location and distribute out from there, thereby saving us money.”

“I could go on and on about the advancements to our business we’ve seen since implementing Savance, but I am sure it would be way too long of a list.  There is not a person on this team that has not seen significant time savings in their role –  from accounting to reporting and billing, Savance just makes it easier for all of us to get our jobs done accurately and efficiently, Thayer says.

“One of the features I tend to use most is the cut-and-paste functionality. That feature alone has been able to substantially reduce the time it takes to create a quote and makes quoting very easy,” says Thayer. “Savance Enterprise ERP Software is so intelligently well connected that everything we need updates — even things we may not be thinking about — and automatically gets refreshed. Savance was way ahead of the game in terms of automation,” Thayer elaborated.

USER GROUP ADDS TO PARTNERSHIP

In addition to the many rich features and valuable benefits, Thayer noted that the user community may be the greatest advantage of partnering with Savance. “It is one of the strongest and most productive user communities I’ve ever been a part of, which makes Savance even more powerful.”

He shared one component that stands out: the partnership between the Savance Enterprise User Group (a team focused on evaluating and discussing new feature ideas) and the Savance development team. “I have seen many ideas go from just a notion to being incorporated into the software. This approach puts the users front and center, a genuine, integral part of the development process.”

As Leslie Electric continues to build for the future, Savance will continue to play an integral role in its success.  “I know that by having Savance and the entire team working together we will just continue to expand and grow.  It’s wonderful to have a technology partner as invested in your business as you are.  It truly is the crux of continued success.”
